An Easier Home to Navigate: Five Small Changes for Senior Pets

Improve traction, access and resting areas to make a familiar home easier to use.

Start senior pet care with the routes your pet uses every day. Adapt the environment to their mobility. Discuss falls or evident discomfort with your veterinarian first.

  1. Improve traction: Secure non-slip mats on smooth floors along frequently used routes.
  2. Reduce changes in height: Consider stable ramps or low steps without forcing your pet to use them.
  3. Make toileting accessible: Consider litter tray placement and entry height, with clear access routes.
  4. Provide an accessible resting place: Choose a suitable bed without high edges your pet must climb over.
  5. Consider vision, hearing and hazardous areas: Check stairs, balconies and water features, adding barriers when needed.

Make one change at a time and observe whether your pet is more willing to move, rest or use the toilet. Ask your veterinary team to help assess the fit and use of mobility aids.
